The main island and seat of government for the Cook Islands, Rarotonga is a compact volcanic island roughly 32 kilometres in circumference, encircled by a reef lagoon and a sealed coastal road. The mountainous interior rises to 653 metres at Te Manga and is crossed by the Te Ara Oa Metua, an ancient coral pathway used by the island's early Polynesian settlers. The fringing reef provides calm, shallow water for snorkelling and glass-bottom boat tours.
