A small volcanic island with a surrounding triangular lagoon considered one of the most beautiful in the Pacific, Aitutaki sits 225 kilometres north of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. The lagoon contains approximately 21 uninhabited islets, or motu, accessible by boat, of which One Foot Island — with its classic arc of white sand and shallow jade water — is the most frequently photographed. The lagoon's coral heads harbour large schools of tropical fish.
