The largest island in French Polynesia and the location of its capital Papeete, Tahiti consists of two volcanic circles connected by the Taravao Isthmus. The island's interior is dominated by Mount Orohena, reaching 2,241 metres, while the coast features black-sand beaches on the northern shore and the culturally significant surf break of Teahupo'o on the southern peninsula. Teahupo'o is one of the heaviest and most photographed waves in the world.
