A heart-shaped volcanic island 17 kilometres northwest of Tahiti, Moorea is defined by dramatic twin bays — Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay — that cut deep into its mountainous interior. The jagged green peaks of Mount Tohiea and the Belvedere viewpoint above Opunohu Valley offer aerial perspectives over the island's geometry. Moorea's lagoon is home to humpback whales that pass through between July and October on their southern migration.
