A volcanic island in the Society Islands group of French Polynesia, Bora Bora is encircled by a turquoise lagoon and a barrier reef that rank among the most photographed seascapes in the Pacific. The eroded remnant of an ancient volcano, Mount Otemanu, rises 727 metres from the island's centre and is visible from the overwater bungalows that have defined the island's luxury tourism identity. The lagoon's coral gardens and populations of blacktip reef sharks make it a premier snorkelling destination.
