Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park was proclaimed in 2012 and encompasses the entirety of Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda) and surrounding gibber plains, salt lakes, and the Simpson Desert fringe. The park is jointly managed by the South Australian Government and the Arabana people, whose traditional ownership of the country includes the lake and its spiritual significance in their law. Beyond the lake itself, the park contains red sand dunes, claypans, and remnant drainage channels that channel rainfall from half a continent to the lake floor.
