Carnarvon Gorge is a 30-kilometre sandstone gorge cut by Carnarvon Creek through the Expedition Ranges of central Queensland, protecting a remarkable concentration of ancient Aboriginal rock art in sheltered overhangs. The Cathedral Cave and Art Gallery sites contain stencilled hands, engravings, and drawn figures accumulated over an estimated 3,500 years of use by the Bidjara and Karingbal peoples. The gorge floor supports a sheltered ecosystem of cycads, tree ferns, and tall gum trees that contrasts with the surrounding semi-arid brigalow scrub.
