The Bay of Fires extends along Tasmania's northeast coast for approximately 29 kilometres between the Ansons River and Eddystone Point, a stretch of white-sand beach interrupted by orange and red lichen-covered granite boulders at the waterline. The bay's name, given by Tobias Furneaux in 1773, refers not to the lichen but to fires observed along the shore from Aboriginal communities. The southern access at Binalong Bay connects to the Bay of Fires Lodge Walk, a guided four-day coastal walk that traverses the length of the bay.
