Kings Canyon rises 270 metres above the Watarrka plain in the George Gill Range within Watarrka National Park, 300 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs. The Rim Walk, a six-kilometre circuit, traces the canyon's sandstone rim past beehive-shaped domes of the Garden of Eden — a hidden gorge with a permanent waterhole where cycad palms grow in the sheltered base. The canyon walls, formed from Mereenie sandstone of Permian age, display horizontal stratification worn into stepped terraces by wind and occasional rain.
