Nitmiluk National Park, formerly Katherine Gorge, encompasses a series of thirteen successive sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River 30 kilometres northeast of the town of Katherine. The gorges, sacred to the Jawoyn people whose name Nitmiluk means 'cicada dreaming', reveal walls of ancient sandstone up to 70 metres high that glow orange and red in the morning light. Flat-bottomed tour boats and canoe hire provide access into the gorge system in the dry season, when the river level drops to reveal sandy beaches between the canyon walls.
