The Hunter Valley, two hours north of Sydney, is Australia's oldest wine-producing region, with commercial vineyards operating continuously since the 1820s. The lower Hunter is most associated with Semillon and Shiraz, produced from a warm, humid climate that distinguishes it from Australian wine regions further south. The Cessnock and Pokolbin areas form the core of the cellar-door district, with the Brokenback Range providing a backdrop of low escarpment.
