Phillip Island connects to the Victoria mainland by a bridge across the Newhaven narrows, 140 kilometres southeast of Melbourne. The island is known for its nightly Penguin Parade at Summerland Beach, where a colony of little penguins (Eudyptula minor) emerges from the sea after dark to return to their burrows. The western end of the island's rugged coastline at Cape Woolamai contains pink granite sea stacks and is the site of Victoria's largest colony of short-tailed shearwaters.
