Coober Pedy is a remote mining town 850 kilometres north of Adelaide in the Stuart Range, responsible for supplying approximately 70 percent of the world's gem-quality opal. To escape extreme summer temperatures, residents have built homes, churches, and businesses underground in the soft sandstone — a practice known locally as dugout living. The Painted Hills and Moon Plain surrounding the town form a starkly lunar landscape used as a filming location for science-fiction productions.
