The Coorong is a long, narrow lagoon system extending 130 kilometres south of the Murray River mouth along South Australia's Younghusband Peninsula, separated from the Southern Ocean by a narrow dune barrier. The wetlands are protected within Coorong National Park and listed under the Ramsar Convention as internationally significant waterbird habitat, supporting tens of thousands of migratory and resident birds including pelicans, ibis, and numerous wader species. The landscape features in Colin Thiele's novel Storm Boy.
