The Flinders Ranges extend 430 kilometres through the mid-north of South Australia, representing one of Australia's oldest mountain systems, with rocks dating to the Precambrian era of more than 800 million years ago. Wilpena Pound, a natural amphitheatre of quartzite ridges enclosing a sunken plain, is the centrepiece of Flinders Ranges National Park and an important site for Adnyamathanha people. Dawn and dusk light on the red-orange quartzite ridges and river red gums along creekbeds produce characteristic outback photography conditions.
