Magnetic Island lies eight kilometres offshore from Townsville in the central section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, with 70 percent of its area protected as national park. Granite headlands divide the island's north and east coasts into a series of sheltered bays, several with fringing reef accessible from the beach. The island has a permanent resident population, a sealed road network, and regular ferry services from Townsville, making it accessible as a day trip or multi-day stay.
