Cairns is the primary urban centre of far north Queensland and the main gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest. The city esplanade runs along Trinity Inlet, where a large tidal lagoon pool provides swimming in the stinger season. Cairns is the departure point for liveaboard diving expeditions to the outer ribbon reefs, day trips to Green Island and Fitzroy Island, and the Kuranda Scenic Railway that climbs through rainforest to the Atherton Tablelands.
