Nambung National Park, 250 kilometres north of Perth, contains the Pinnacles Desert — a landscape of thousands of limestone spires rising from yellow sand dunes near the Indian Ocean coast. The formations, up to 3.5 metres tall, were created when ancient seashells dissolved and calcite cemented the surrounding dune sand before the softer material eroded away. Low-angle morning and late-afternoon light creates strong shadows between the pillars and is preferred by photographers.
