Monkey Mia is a sheltered bay within Shark Bay Marine Park on the remote Gascoyne coast of Western Australia, where a population of wild Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins has habitually approached the beach shallows since the 1960s. Rangers facilitate carefully managed morning interactions at the water's edge to minimize disturbance to the dolphins' natural behaviour. The site sits within the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, which also encompasses stromatolites at Hamelin Pool — living microbial mats considered among the oldest life forms on Earth.
