Fremantle sits at the mouth of the Swan River 19 kilometres south of Perth, its Victorian-era streetscape largely intact owing to an economic downturn that paused development during the early twentieth century. The West End heritage precinct contains warehouses, hotels, and civic buildings constructed from local limestone following the colony's gold rush of the 1890s. Fremantle Prison, a convict-built structure completed in 1859 and a World Heritage Site, anchors the southeastern corner of the historic centre.
