Port Arthur Historic Site preserves the remains of the largest convict settlement in the Australian colonies, established on the Tasman Peninsula in 1830 and operating until 1877. The sandstone ruins of the penitentiary, church, and model prison stand within a landscaped grounds that once served as an elaborate mechanism of colonial control. The site is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing and includes a museum with extensive artefact collections.
