Cradle Mountain's serrated dolerite peaks rise to 1,545 metres above Dove Lake in the heart of Tasmania's central highlands, a landscape shaped by successive glaciations. The reflection of the mountain in Dove Lake at dawn, particularly in still autumn conditions, is one of the most reproduced images in Australian nature photography. The Overland Track, an 80-kilometre wilderness walk, begins at Cradle Valley and traverses alpine moorlands south to Lake St Clair.
