The Blue Mountains rise abruptly from the Sydney Basin roughly 65 kilometres west of the city, forming a sandstone plateau deeply incised by gorges and clad in dense eucalyptus forest. The fine haze of eucalyptus oil gives the range its characteristic blue tint when viewed from escarpment lookouts such as Echo Point. The Three Sisters formation at Katoomba and the Jamison Valley below are the most visited features within the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.
