Getting lost is half the point in Camagüey, where serpentine lanes, blind alleys and a scatter of plazas defy the rigid grids of most Latin American colonial towns. Established on its present site in 1528 as one of Cuba's earliest Spanish settlements, the city prospered on cattle and sugar while its builders kept to medieval European habits of layout and construction. The 54-hectare historic core, layered with neoclassical, Art Deco and Art Nouveau facades, earned World Heritage status from UNESCO in 2008.
