Oslob is a municipality on the southern tip of Cebu island where whale sharks (locally called butanding) gather in a bay off Tan-awan barangay due to a controversial feeding program that has made the site one of the most visited wildlife encounters in the Philippines. The predictability of whale shark sightings at dawn has made Oslob a major tourism draw, though the practice of hand-feeding aggregates whale sharks in an unnaturally small area and the long-term effects on the animals' behaviour and health remain debated among marine scientists.
