Apo Island is a small volcanic island off the southeastern coast of Negros, managed as a marine sanctuary by the local community since 1982 in one of the earliest and most studied examples of community-based marine conservation in Southeast Asia. The surrounding reef has recovered substantially from its pre-protection state and now supports one of the highest densities of sea turtles in the Philippines, with green and hawksbill turtles reliably encountered by snorkellers and divers throughout the day. The steep western wall drops rapidly to over 30 metres and is frequented by schooling fish and pelagic species.
