Cebu City is the oldest city in the Philippines and the regional capital of the Central Visayas, settled by Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi in 1565. The Basilica Minore del Santo Niño houses a statue of the Infant Jesus presented by Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon's wife in 1521, making it the oldest religious artefact in the Philippines and the centrepiece of the Sinulog Festival held each January. Magellan's Cross, planted adjacent to the basilica to mark the first Christian baptism in the Philippines, stands in a chapel within a hexagonal kiosk.
