Camiguin is a small island province off the northern coast of Mindanao, notable for having more volcanoes per square kilometre than any other island on Earth, with four of its seven peaks classified as active. Beneath the sea immediately offshore lies the Sunken Cemetery, a coral-encrusted graveyard submerged by a volcanic eruption in 1871 and marked by a large white cross visible above the surface. White Island, an uninhabited sandbar north of Mambajao, appears to float on the surface of the Bohol Sea against a backdrop of forested volcanic slopes.
