Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island off the northeastern coast of Mindanao, internationally recognized as the surfing capital of the Philippines since Cloud 9, a hollow right-hand tube break over a shallow reef, was placed on the international surfing circuit. The island's interior and mangrove-fringed lagoons contrast with its wave-facing eastern coast, and island-hopping tours to Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island have broadened Siargao's appeal beyond the surfing community. The island avoided significant development until the mid-2010s, preserving a laid-back character relative to other Philippine resort destinations.
