Mayon Volcano, at 2,463 metres the most active volcano in the Philippines, is renowned for the near-perfect symmetry of its cone, which is consistently cited as one of the most geometrically regular volcanic forms on Earth. The volcano is the defining feature of the Mayon Volcano Natural Park in Albay province, southeastern Luzon, where agricultural land presses to the flanks of the exclusion zone. Dawn views from the Cagsawa Ruins foreground — the collapsed bell tower of an eighteenth-century Franciscan church buried in the 1814 eruption — are a classic compositional subject.
