Boracay is a small island 315 kilometres south of Manila that rose to international prominence in the 1980s for White Beach, a four-kilometre arc of fine powdery sand on the western coast. The beach faces west, producing celebrated sunset views over the Sibuyan Sea that are the island's signature photographic subject. After a six-month government closure and rehabilitation in 2018, visitor numbers and commercial density have been regulated to prevent a recurrence of the severe environmental degradation that prompted the shutdown.
