Sandakan is a port city on the northeastern coast of Sabah that serves as the principal gateway to Borneo's most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries, including the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Kinabatangan River basin. The city's Second World War history is preserved at the Sandakan Memorial Park, the site of a prisoner-of-war camp from which the Sandakan Death Marches departed in 1945. The nearby Gomantong Caves host vast colonies of swiftlets and bats, with raptors and hornbills patrolling the cave entrance.
