Sheer limestone towers called mogotes rear from the floor of the Viñales valley, ringed by mountains and worked much as it has been for generations. Tobacco is still raised here by traditional methods, among farms and villages of vernacular architecture whose multi-ethnic community reflects the cultural making of Cuba and the wider Caribbean. UNESCO inscribed the Viñales Valley as a cultural landscape in 1999.
