Sipadan rises from the deep floor of the Celebes Sea as an oceanic island off the northeastern coast of Borneo, and is widely regarded as one of the premier dive sites in the world. The island is encircled by a wall of living coral that drops vertically into the abyss, regularly visited by large schools of barracuda and jackfish, green and hawksbill turtles, and occasional hammerhead sharks. Daily visitor numbers are strictly limited by the Malaysian government to protect the ecosystem.
