A small town on the Nam Ou River in northern Laos, Nong Khiaw is hemmed in by near-vertical limestone karst formations that rise sharply from the river valley floor. It is one of the best-preserved examples of a small Lao river town little altered by tourism development, and its two-panel Phadeng Peak viewpoint provides a classic panoramic perspective over the rooftops and river with the karst backdrop. Boat journeys on the Nam Ou connect it to Muang Ngoi Neua, an even smaller village further upriver accessible only by water.
