A riverside town on the Nam Song in central Laos, Vang Vieng occupies a valley flanked by dramatic karst limestone formations that rise abruptly from flat-bottomed paddy fields. The surrounding hills contain cave systems including Tham Chang, which served as a wartime refuge, and Tham Hoi, accessible by boat along an underground river. Hot air balloon flights over the valley at sunrise provide the widest photographic perspective on the karst topography and the river winding through it.
