A multi-tiered travertine waterfall about 29 kilometres south of Luang Prabang, Kuang Si Falls descends approximately 60 metres through a series of turquoise-blue pools formed by calcium carbonate deposits on the streambed. The pools at the lower tiers are shallow enough for swimming and are set within a forest reserve that also contains a sun bear rescue centre. The main falls are most photogenic in the wet season when water volume is highest, though the pools remain swimmable and visually striking throughout the dry season.
