A Mekong River town in northeastern Cambodia, Kratie is the best base for observing the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphin, a freshwater population that inhabits the deep pools of the Mekong near Kampi, about fifteen kilometres north of town. The town itself preserves a coherent stretch of French colonial shophouses along its riverfront and serves as a crossing point for exploring Koh Trong island — a large sand island in the Mekong where a bicycle path circles past fruit farms and Cham Muslim villages.
