A riverside town in southern Cambodia, Kampot is built along the Praek Tuek Chhu River near its outlet into the Gulf of Thailand and retains a concentration of early twentieth-century French colonial architecture in its central streets. The town is the production centre of Kampot pepper, a variety with a protected geographical indication cultivated on pepper farms in the surrounding countryside. The nearby Bokor National Park rises steeply to an eroded colonial hill station at around 1,000 metres, accessible by winding mountain road.
