A remote mountainous province in far northeastern Vietnam bordering China, Cao Bằng is centred on the Bản Giốc-Detian Falls — a multi-tiered waterfall on the Quây Sơn River straddling the Vietnamese-Chinese border and among the largest by width in Asia. The surrounding karst landscape of the Non Nước Cao Bằng UNESCO Global Geopark includes cave systems, minority Tày and Nùng villages, and dramatic mountain roads through the Mã Phục and Khau Chỉa passes. The falls are most dramatic in the wet season when water volume peaks.
