A mountainous district in Yên Bái Province, Mù Cang Chải is home to some of Vietnam's most visually striking rice terraces, which cascade across slopes at elevations above 1,000 metres. The terraces are tended almost exclusively by the Mông ethnic minority and are most photogenic during the golden harvest season in September and October, when ripe paddies turn the hillsides amber and ochre. The winding road through the Khau Phạ Pass offers panoramic views across the entire valley system.
