A highland town in Lào Cai Province near the Chinese border, Sa Pa sits at roughly 1,500 metres elevation amid some of the most dramatic rice-terrace landscapes in Southeast Asia. The surrounding hillsides, cultivated primarily by Hmong and Dao ethnic communities, are layered with flooded paddies that catch and reflect the sky during planting season. Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina, rises above the town and is accessible by cable car or trekking trail.
