Ubon Ratchathani is the easternmost major city in Thailand, situated near the confluence of the Mun and Chi rivers close to the Laotian and Cambodian borders. The city hosts the Candle Festival each July, in which enormous wax sculptures are paraded through the streets as part of Buddhist Lent observances. Nearby, Sam Phan Bok — a stretch of the Mekong River floor exposed during the dry season featuring thousands of basalt hollows — is sometimes described as Thailand's answer to the Grand Canyon. Pha Taem National Park preserves prehistoric rock paintings on cliffs above the Mekong.
