Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is a Khmer Hindu sanctuary built primarily during the tenth to thirteenth centuries on the rim of an extinct volcano in Buriram Province. The approach is along a formal processional avenue that aligns precisely with the rising sun at the April full moon, an astronomical alignment that draws large crowds annually. The central tower and its surrounding galleries are well-preserved, and a series of lintels on the site are considered among the finest examples of Khmer decorative carving in Thailand. The view from the summit across the surrounding plains is extensive.
