Phimai Historical Park protects the ruins of Prasat Hin Phimai, one of the largest Khmer stone sanctuaries in Thailand, built primarily between the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. The complex is connected to Angkor by an ancient royal road and shares architectural characteristics with Angkor Wat, including a sequence of concentric enclosures, gopura gateways, and a sandstone central tower. The site is set within the town of Phimai and is maintained as an open-air museum. An adjacent open-air museum displays carved lintels and statuary recovered from the site.
