Nakhon Ratchasima, commonly called Korat, is the largest city in northeastern Thailand and the gateway to the Khorat Plateau. The city serves as a transport hub for the region and is home to the Suranaree Monument, which commemorates a local heroine who organised resistance to a Lao army incursion in 1826. The nearby Phimai Historical Park, about 60 kilometres to the north, preserves one of the most complete Khmer temple complexes in Thailand, predating and stylistically related to Angkor Wat. Khmer stone sanctuaries are scattered throughout the province.
