Côte d'Ivoire's first capital was laid out by function: separate quarters for commerce, administration and the homes of Europeans and Africans, colonial houses with galleries and verandas standing beside the N'zima fishing village. As the territory's chief port and judicial seat, Grand-Bassam drew people from across Africa, Europe and the Levant, and later became a crucible of the independence movement. UNESCO inscribed the historic town in 2012.
