Loei Province in the upper northeast of Thailand borders Laos along the Mekong River and includes two significant national parks — Phu Kradung and Phu Rua — that occupy high plateau landscapes with cool temperatures and distinctive vegetation. The province experiences the coldest temperatures recorded anywhere in Thailand during winter months. Phu Kradueng National Park features a large flat summit at around 1,300 metres with pine forests and seasonal wildflowers, accessible by a well-maintained hiking trail. The region is also known for Dan Sai district's Phi Ta Khon spirit festival, one of the most visually distinctive cultural events in Thailand.
