Ko Tarutao is the largest island in the Tarutao National Marine Park in Satun Province, one of the first marine national parks established in Thailand. The island has a turbulent history as a penal colony during the 1930s and 1940s, and ruins of the prison camp remain at Talo Wao Bay. The interior is covered in dense primary rainforest and the coastline largely undeveloped, accessible only by boat from Pak Bara pier. The island's remoteness from Phuket's tourism infrastructure means it receives substantially fewer visitors than the better-known Andaman destinations.
