Nan is a small provincial capital in a remote valley in the mountains of the same name near the Laotian border. The city preserves a particularly well-maintained historic centre with Lanna-style temples, including Wat Phumin, famous for its unusual cruciform plan and interior murals painted in the 1890s depicting local aristocratic life and Nan valley landscapes. The province produces high-quality mandarin oranges and hosts boat-racing festivals in October. Its relative difficulty of access has helped preserve a quieter and more traditional character.
